We’ve gotten some questions about land being cleared near South Ridge Trail in Chino Hills State Park. This is the beginnings of a multi-year restoration project funded by two agencies: Caltrans and the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA). The first is mitigation from a fire in Coal Canyon (Caltrans) and the second is mitigation for impacts related to freeway projects (OCTA). Did you know that our region has a special evergreen tree called toyon? Yep, this species has bright red “showy” berries present in the winter months. Often times it is called “Holly Berry.” Rumor has it that “Hollywood” is named after the Holly Berry tree. So, if you are on the trail and see this gem–remember its fun winter display of color.
