The City of Industry is in escrow to purchase the last major ownership in Tonner Canyon. Owned by the Boy Scouts of America this land has been used for all sorts of nature-related youth events (camping, archery, picnics, etc.) Hills For Everyone’s Claire Schlotterbeck is concerned about the sale because of the important habitat the canyon contains for wildlife.
The Chino Champion uncovered that the new City of Industry City Council has put the sale of the Tres Hermanos property on hold for 60-90 days. Apparently the City of Industry is looking at nearly $6 million in fines due to damaging the environment. City officials contend the former Mayor’s company “Zerep,” hired for a variety of tasks, did the damage unbeknownst to the City or Council and without a permit. The City of Industry has its sights set on scraping the hillsides clean and constructing several dams along with side (saddle) dams in Tonner Canyon, as well as adding a road along the ridgetop–all of this on top of an earthquake fault.
