Wow. This was a complete about face for the courts. The Matrix Oil project decision, which had been stopped in the court, was just reversed. The old contract between Whittier and Matrix is expired. This decision allows the oil company and the City to renegotiate a new contract and specific terms for oil drilling in the Puente Hills Preserve. Read the Whittier Daily News article.
Residents registered serious complaints to the Whittier City Council in September about the misuse and abuse of Hellman Park in Whittier. Research done about the park visitors indicates that 75% of users are coming from outside of Whittier, which in and of itself, is having a huge impact on traffic and street parking near the Park. The Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority is considering its options. Check out this Whittier Daily News article.
We are thrilled to recap the award ceremony from Thursday, March 17th. Claire Schlotterbeck, Executive Director of Hills For Everyone, received the 2016 Conservation Award for her work establishing Chino Hills State Park and protecting the entire Puente-Chino Hills Wildlife Corridor from the Whittier Audubon President Jennifer Schmahl.
