Everyone recognizes that vibrant orange of the California Poppy against the green hillsides. The bloom this year could be good, great or a super bloom–time will tell. Fire and drought coupled with massive rains tend to cause a massive bloom. Chino Hills State Park Senior Environmental Specialist Ken Kietzer says with temps staying cool it helps keep the blooms. The bad news: Our trees are dying and the worst is yet to come. From the drought to insect infestations to mold—the once stressed trees are now dying suddenly. The state has identified more than 70 million trees that are dead. This is a significant fire hazard. Hills For Everyone has been involved with the Carbon Canyon Fire Safe Council to ensure our homes and wildlands are protected from wildfires. Residents have been asked to cut back their water use. In some cases, it is as high as 36% cutbacks. The irony, as Editorial Writer Ray Chandos notes, is that while we are required to cut back, decision makers and water districts are approving water guzzling projects and offering “will serve” letters.
