Mountain Lion Moves Closer to Protected Status

The Southern California sub-species of mountain lion may get extra protections from the state. The populations are at risk of extinction due to habitat fragmentation, lack of breeding partners, wildlife-vehicle collisions, depredation permits, and loss of habitat. A review period will be opened if the State Fish and Game Commission decides to formally grant our local cougars protected status. View the Los Angeles Times article.

P61 Crosses 405 Freeway

This is fitting considering our post from yesterday. This Santa Monica Mountains cougar (P-61) managed to cross the 405 freeway near the Sepulveda Pass between 2 and 4 AM on July 19th. Go P-61! Fingers crossed at some point in the future, our wildlife will be able to safely cross our roadways with overpasses/culverts because we’ve planned them better. The risk is death. Animal Overpasses

Wildlife bridges are coming to California to reduce animal-vehicle related collisions, keep wildlands connected, and retrofit transportation projects. Wildlife in the Santa Ana Mountains face inbreeding and extinction if the natural lands aren’t connected to other protected lands. But alas, work is already being done in the Puente Hills.
